The French writer Montesquieu,who was born to an aristocratic family in France in 1689,was one of the leading figures of the Enlightenment. He is best known for the political philosophy he expressed in L'Esprit des Lois, and in fact 1... was this book on which much of the American Constitution was based. He was also one of the first philosophers to come up with the theory that the climate played a significant role 2... determining the natures of both individuals and societies. He suggested that people from hot countries in the Middle East tended to be hot-tempered and weak; people from colder societies in the north were quite different: 3... only were they more rational, but they were also more energetic. Of course, these ideas on climate have largely been discredited since then, but 4... Montesquieu can take some credit for is that he did at least attempt to develop his ideas from his own scientific and medical observations. He concluded, perhaps not surprisingly, that the best country to live in was France.
